Don’t Mess With Miss Watkins

“I’m here, cuz the late bus blues don’t care.”

That’s about all you need to know. That lyric. That’s pretty much the blues as Miss Watkins plays ’em. And that’s about all you need to know. But if you need to know more, you might consider this:

“…real Lightnin’ Hopkins lowdown blues. I would call that hard classic blues, hard stompin’ blues, you know… railroad smokin’ blues!”

That’s how Beverly “Guitar” Watkins describes her sound. And that’s about all you need to know.

Meaning, you should be runnin’ for the PLAY button.

And yes, I’m partial to Miss Watkins because we share a last name. Sadly, that’s how I discovered her music. Not because she’s well known, but because of the last name. She SHOULD be well known. But I’m glad I discovered her either way. You’ll feel the same when you discover her, I’m sure of it. Unless you’re already familiar. Which I hope you are!

I was on the fence about which album to recommend, as I really love “The Spiritual Expressions of Beverly Guitar Watkins.” But ultimately, I think “Don’t Mess With Miss Watkins” is a better introduction.

Recommended Track To Start With: “Baghdad Blues”

Another American marine, has been confirmed killed
You all know, that gives me chills
It is up to each country to end this war

If that’s a little heavy for you and your morning coffee, you might try “The Right String but the Wrong Yoyo.” That’s a whole different kind of badass. But it’s badass all the same. Don’t mess with Miss Watkins, indeed.
