Jessie Mae Hemphill – She-Wolf

Aw man, this is TOUGH music! Don’t let NOBODY tell ya a woman can’t play and sing the HELL outta the country blues.

To musicologist Dave Evans, we can be thankful for at least two things, certainly: 1) Big Road Blues: Tradition and Creativity in the Folk Blues, which is one of the good early books about this music, and 2) Jessie Mae Hemphill.

For all intents and purposes, his recordings of Jessie Mae are her first recordings, and they’re captured here on this album, and they’re fucking incredible!

Honestly, of the 90+ records I’ve recommended so far, I’m going to say this is one discovery you really can’t miss. If you haven’t heard the music of Jessie Mae Hemphill, go get this album. PLEASE!
