Frank Sinatra – In The Wee Small Hours
Song for song, performance for performance, I think this simply has to be understood as Sinatra’s crowing achievement; with his version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “I Get Along Without You Very Well” being the nee plus ultra of his entire body of work.
There are hundreds of other Sinatra performances I’ll happily and gratefully listen to, but I could also live forever with just this one album.
Nelson Riddle would certainly never do anything comparable again, and while Sinatra had accomplishments still to come, this is a moment in time thankfully captured on an album we can and should treasure forever.
This is one of the greats, at his greatest.
