Alberta Hunter – Complete Recorded Works in Chronological Order

Volume 1 is pictured here, but you owe it to yourself to listen to Document’s whole series; few singers have committed as much character to posterity as has Alberta Hunter, and her influence is still felt far and wide. Did she write “Downhearted Blues,” the song that was such a huge hit for Bessie Smith? She did. Did she sing with King Oliver in her earliest days? She did. Did she play opposite Paul Robeson in Show Boat in London? She did. Did she record with Armstrong and Bechet? She did.

She did it all.

And it all starts here.
